What are cognitive communication disorders?

Cognitive communication disorders (CCD, Kognitive Kommunikationsstörungen) are caused by an impaired interaction between cognitive skills and the ability to use language in a manner which is appropriate to the situation. Hence, these disorders tend to affect a person’s pragmatic competence. KoKos are often the result of traumatic brain injury or other disorders that stem from damage to brain areas which are relevant to communication.

Research about and the treatment of KoKos call for interdisciplinary teamwork, as these disorders constitute an intersection of language, cognition and behavior.
Disorders of the executive system and of social cognition play a special role, as they can lead to an impairment in planning and extracting meaning from conversations and texts. Communicative misunderstandings.
